Character Name: Sokka
Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Gender: Male
Age: 15-16
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Species: Human
Appearance:
Sokka hasn't quite finished growing, but of 'Team Avatar' he's the second tallest, with a lean frame. His complexion is dark, with a pair of blue eyes. His hair is dark brown, left long across the crown of his head and worn pulled back into aponytailwarrior's wolf tail. The hair on the sides of his head was shaved, but has been left to grow out an inch or so.
His usual choice of clothing lately is a medium blue sleeveless tunic edged in white, some darker blue leggings, a pair of fingerless gloves with wrapping up his arms and tall leather boots. white bead (or bone?) choker around his neck, is his one constant. At the time he was taken, over top of this he was wearing a thicker darker blue tunic with fur across the bottom with a large top piece around his neck and shoulders.
Personality:
While Sokka is known for his love of meat and sarcasm, there's certainly more to Avatar's main source of comedy.
Sokka's just a regular guy, or at least so he'll tell you. With no bending abilities of his own, he considers himself a warrior and is very proud of that fact. As his mother died when he was a child and his father left for war, he was left in charge to be the man of the tribe. Protecting those he cares about is something he takes very seriously and he doesn't shrug off responsibility. He easily falls into a leadership role, taking charge of a situation with a fair amount of ease.
He's fairly good natured and generally pretty laid back. He can be quite affectionate and even sweet, particularly to his girlfriend, Suki. Bursts off anger are usually short lived, but he does tend to hold grudges and often is seen sulking when something is bothering him.
Apart from meat and sarcasm, Sokka's also known for coming up with ideas. He tends to think outside the box, solving problems in sometime rather unorthodox ways. He has come up with some pretty elaborate plans, but they don't always work out. He's very quick thinking and quite clever, though it might be hard to believe sometimes as he can also be rather clumsy and more than a little dense.
He has a great deal of energy and can seem very exuberant, over-reacting is a common occurrence, to the point of seeming a bit of a spazz. Many things can get him excited, such as shopping! He's also a bit of a skeptic. He'd rather put his trust in facts and science over myths and magic, although by the end of the series he's seen enough stuff to definitely take these things into more consideration than he once did.
As much as he likes to be taken seriously, he does also enjoy trying to be funny, but often his attempts at humour fall flat, and he ends up the only one laughing (and maybe his dad). His best of moments of comedy are usually when he's not trying to be funny, as he tends to end up in the most foolish situations or ones of just plain bad luck. He often manages to make himself look rather goofy.
Sokka generally speaks his mind, and often it comes in the form of sarcasm. It's rare he doesn't have something to say about a situation, in fact.
Abilities:
Sokka is just a regular teenage human. Unlike the rest of Team Avatar he lacks any bending skills. Though he considers himself a warrior, his skill with the sword started off poor at best, however over time he did improve greatly, especially after training with his very own master, Piandao. While he didn't yet have the skill to defeat his master, his master believed he could very well far surpass him one day. Other than the sword, he also has a love for his boomerang.
While he is a bit clumsy and his skill not yet truly sharpened, by the ending of the series his skill has seemed to already have improved.
It's also notable that Sokka might be slightly ambitexterous. While seen writing with his right hand, he's been seen holding using his weapons with either hand, and drawing with his left (although that does nothing to improve his drawings.)
He's also a bit of a strategist, able to come up with some rather clever plans, but they don't always work out.
Manhattanite or outsider? Outsider
History:
Born in the southern water tribe nation, Sokka ended up growing up a lot faster than most boys when his mother was killed in a Fire Nation raid. When 14 his father left to fight in the war, leaving him as the sole man of the tribe. Protecting the tribe was something Sokka took very seriously, feeling it his duty with the other men gone.
Out fishing with his younger sister, Katara the two happened upon a large block of ice which would change their lives forever.
The ice contained a young boy named Aang who turned out to be the last Air Bender and the next Avatar. The Avatar was said to be the only one who could possibly bring an end to the war, however, having been trapped in the ice for 100 years, Aang was still just a boy who hadn't even begun training in the other types of bending.
Katara and Sokka's grandmother, believing them finding Aang to be a sign of fate, suggested they go and try to help the Avatar.
So the three, along with Appa, Aang's flying bison, they headed northward to the north water tribe. However, they had a few stops along the way, as they had to dodge a Prince from the Fire Nation called Zuko, who was trying to find the Avatar for his father to regain his own honour.
One stop they made was to the Island of Kyoshi. There Sokka met a girl warrior named Suki. Sokka, at the time, had the idea in his head that woman should be sewing and cooking rather than out fighting. Suki and her friends, however, knock him down a few pegs, and he comes to realize he was wrong. He also gets a bit of a crush on Suki.
With the Fire Nation on their tracks, they continue on stopping a bit in the Earth Kingdom, then headed for Cresent Island in the fire nation where Aang would be able to talk to the previous Avatar. Managing to get in, Avatar Roku tells Aang he must master all the element and defeat the Fire Lord within a year, before the comet that allowed the previous Fire Lord, Sozin to start the war, will return and allow the current Fire Lord to finish it.
With that knowledge they head off, and eventually arrive at the Northern Water Tribe at the north pole. While Aang and Katara went about trying to learn water bending, Sokka fell head over heels for the Princess of the tribe. Yue was beautiful, sweet... and engaged to a jerk. Despite that, the two couldn't shake the connection they had, but destiny had something else in mind. The Fire Nation attacked, and the moon spirit killed, cutting off all the waterbender's power. Yue sacrificed herself to become the moon spirit. For some time Sokka felt guilty for not being able to protect her.
With waterbending mastered by Aang and Katara, they continue on their journey. They started to search for an earthbender to teach Aang, thus meeting Toph. She was reluctant at first, but ended up running away from her parents and joining them.
Then they headed to a desert where they learned there was a great library that might have information to help them figure out how to defeat the fire nation. Breaking the rules of the library, they managed to find out about a solar eclipse. With that information, a plan was formed, largely by Sokka, to attack the fire nation during the eclipse, as the fire bender's powers would be cut off.
While in the library, Appa had been captured and sold. Following leads, they head towards Ba Sing Se, the last great free city of the Earth Kingdom. They stop first at Serpents path, and meet up with the Kyoshi warriors once more, along with Suki. Managing to get into Ba Sing Se, they find a world where the outside problems are being kept out, and people left clueless and unwilling to listen to the group's information.
However, the Fire Lord's daughter, Azula, gets involved and hatches a plot to take over Ba Sing Se. The fire nation attacks and the city falls. Aang is also badly injured by Azula but saved by Katara.
Regrouping, they hide out on a fire nation ship which was stolen. The world thinks Aang is dead, and they convince him to keep it that way.
With plans in the works to attack the Fire Nation during the eclipse (mostly hatched by Sokka himself!) the group disguises themselves to fit into the Fire Nation population, and make their way to the meeting place.
On their way, Sokka gets a bout of feeling uselessness, as the others all have bending but him. Aang suggests he try to find himself a master of his own. He manages to learn of a swordsmen called Piandao, however apparently he's never taken on any student before. Sokka tries and when Piandao asks why he thinks he's worthy, he answers honestly, saying he's not sure he is at all.
No one had ever said that, and Piandao does take Sokka on. Sokka learns a lot and his skills do improve. He even got to make an awesome sword with a meteorite! But when his master presented it to him, he felt guilty having not told his master the truth that he was from the Water Tribe. Piandao challenges him and the two duel. Piandao does finally defeat him, but he says he knew all along Sokka wasn't from the Fire Nation. He tells Sokka he thinks he'll surpass him one day. Sokka's spirits boosted, they head to the meeting place.
On the day of the eclipse, the water nation, and others who they'd met on their journey, arrive and the attack commences. However, the fire nation had long ago learned of their secret attack, and was ready for them. The attack fails. There were casualties and many were captured and taken to prison, including Sokka and Katara's father. However, it isn't felt like the attack was a total loss. They were close.
Finding another Air Temple, they take refuge there. Zuko, the Prince who'd been after the Avatar for so long, had gone through quite an ordeal himself, and had finally come to realize a lot about himself and what he wanted his destiny to be - to help the Avatar. Appealing to the group, he tries to convince them he's changed and that he is willing to help Aang learn firebending. The group is more than a little skeptical, and they turn him away at first. But when he helps to save them from an assassin he himself had hired (and who wouldn't give up, although in the end it's Sokka and his boomerang that saves the day) they finally reluctantly give in. However, it takes some time for them to truly trust him.
Feeling responsible for his father and other tribesmen's capture, Sokka decides to head to the island prison they were taken to and free them. Accompanied by Zuko, he finds not only his father, but also Suki. Freeing Suki first, the three manage to find and free Sokka's father, along with some of the other Watertribe people.
Finally the group, now including Suki (who had pretty much at this point become Sokka's girlfriend \o/), head to Ember Island, where they mostly relax while Aang continues to train. However, Zuko is angry when he finds out the group had decided, without telling him, that Aang would try to fight the Fire Lord after the comet. Since the Fire Nation had defeated Ba Sing Se, they'd almost won the war, so things couldn't get worse. Except, they could. Zuko told them of a plan his father had hatched. Fire Lord Ozai would use the comet's power to completely destroy the Earth Kingdom.
With that news, they had no choice but to prepare. The group was more than a little panicked when they woke up one morning, however, and found Aang missing from the island. Attempting to track him down, failed, and in the end they headed to Ba Sing Se, to seek Zuko's uncle who they hoped might know what they should do. Iroh, Zuko's Uncle, told them they should believe in destiny.
The group decided to split up. Katara went with Zuko to head to the Fire Nation to deal with Azula and have Zuko take the throne and Toph, Suki and Sokka headed off to try to support Aang anyway they could. The three learn about airships the Fire Nation would be using to spread fire down on the Earth Kingdom, and they manage to get on a ship and take over.
The three are ecstatic when they reach the edge of the Earth Kingdom and see Aang standing there waiting. While Aang fights the Fire Lord, the three manage to slam the airship across the top of the others. Escaping the damaged ship, they land on another, but Sokka and Toph are split from Suki.
Sokka manages to stop their fall, but lands roughly on top of a walkway, injuring his leg, and just manages to keep a hold on Toph's hand, as she dangles below. Soldiers attempt to attack, but with one arm, Sokka manages to grab his boomerang, and knock one off, and then the other with his 'Space Sword'. However, he's out of options and Toph is slipping.
Then suddenly another ship crashes into the ship they're on. It's Suki to the rescue! Sokka drops Toph onto the top of Suki's airship and drops down himself, falling over in pain from his broken leg. In that moment he blacked out for a second and...
